Guide to UW Research Resources
for European Union Law




This guide is designed to address the specific needs and interests of UW Law School students enrolled in Law 942, European Union Law. It emphasizes those resources for secondary research which will enable students to find information related to the European Union.
                                    
I. Current Information

Newspapers and Periodicals

                        
In your class syllabus, Professor Shaffer has identified the following periodicals as important sources for tracking developments with respect to Europe and the European Union. Below are the Law Library locations for print versions of these papers.

With the exceptions of European Voice, all of the news sources listed below are also available on LexisNexis. Both LexisNexis and Westlaw provide access to many other EU and European news sources. See Section III below for more information.

The Economist: Current three months in 5th floor Grand Reading Room browsing area.

European Voice: Current six months. Most recent issue in 5th floor Grand Reading Room browsing area. Older issues in 5th floor, south wing, newspaper area.

Financial Times: Current two weeks only. Most recent issue in 5th floor Grand Reading Room browsing area. Older issues in 5th floor, south wing, newspaper area.

New York Times: Current month only. Most recent issue in 5th floor Grand Reading Room browsing area. Older issues in 5th floor, south wing, newspaper area.

Bulletin of the European Union**

1) Content: Covers all institutions of the EU. Reports on activities of the council and commission. References pertinent points in earlier issues.
2) Coverage/Location:

    Global NewsBank

    1) Content: News articles covering politics, economics, culture, business, science, technology, and the environment from Africa, Asia, Europe, the former Soviet Union, the Pacific Rim, Central and South America, and the Middle East.
    2) Coverage: 1996 - present.
    3) Location: Accessible via the UW Madison Libraries home page at http://www.library.wisc.edu. Click on “Journals, Magazines and Newspapers.” Then follow the links to the appropriate database.

    KnowEurope

    1) Content: Full-text information from a large number of sources covering the European Union and wider Europe, including news, legislative, directory, reference and statistical sources from commercial publishers and from organizations such as the European Union and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.
    2) Coverage/Location: http://www.knoweurope.net (1996 - present).


    II. Journal/Publications Indexes
    - Provide citations to periodicals, books and other titles. Indexes are searchable by a number of different access points (i.e. subject, author, title).

    Europe Specific

    European References
    1)Content: The UW has access only to SCAD (Systeme communitaire d'access a la documentation). This is a multilingual database with abstracts that contains references for European Union documents and publications as well as citations to journal articles about EU-related topics.
    2) Coverage: 1983 - present.
    3) Location: Accessible only in campus libraries via the UW Madison Libraries home page at http://www.library.wisc.edu Click on “Journals, Magazines and Newspapers,” then follow the links to the appropriate database. Also available as ECLAS directly from the EU at http://europa.eu.int/eclas/.

    Legal Journals Index    
    1) Content: Indexes articles from legal journals published in the United Kingdom and Europe and journals covering topics pertaining to the laws of the European Community and of its Member States. More than 430 United Kingdom and English language journals are covered. 2) Coverage/Location:

  • Westlaw: LJI-INDX (1986 - present).
  • Periodical index tables, Grand Reading Room (1986-1999).

  • Legal and Social Science

    Index to Foreign Legal Periodicals
    1) Content: Citations to worldwide legal literature, covering all forms of foreign (non-Anglo-American) law, including comparative law and legal systems.
    2) Coverage/Location:

  • Index to Legal Periodicals Full Text

    1) Content: Citations to articles, bibliographies, book reviews, and other titles from 891 legal periodicals (law reviews and law journals). Also contains citations to more than 2000 law books.
    2) Coverage/Location:

  • Legal Resource Index
    1) Content: Citations to articles in more than 850 English language legal periodicals and newspapers. Some articles have abstracts.
    2) Coverage: 1980 to present.
    3 ) Location: Westlaw (LRI); LexisNexis (LAWREV; LGIND); and in print format known as the Current Law Index. Volumes are located on the periodical index tables in the Grand Reading Room.

    PAIS International Computer File (Public Affairs Information Service)
    1) Content: Citations to more than 900 journals, books, statistical compilations and other titles on an international scale in the areas of public policy, social policy, and the social sciences in general. Includes many EU documents.
    2) Coverage: 1972 to present.
    3) Location: Accessible in campus libraries or remotely by UW-Madison students, faculty, and staff via WiscWorld (1985 - present): http://library.law.wisc.edu/elecresources/databases/allwithann.php
