I. Resources in Print

A. Looseleaf Services and Digests - Print publications that bring together primary and secondary resources concerning a particular area of law. The materials included in this section offer case summaries, commentary and analysis. West's Education Law Reporter and the online version of BNA's Family Law Reporter offer the full-text of court opinions.

West's Education Law Reporter - Reference Collection KF 4110 A2 W47; Westlaw**
1) Contains: Full-text of court opinions and administrative decisions related to education. Also includes articles and case comments that discuss recent rulings and their impact on school policies. Updated through bi-weekly advance sheets.
2) Coverage: 1982 to present (1986 to present on Westlaw).
3) Search by: Table of cases, topical index, key number digest in back of each volume, and West's Education Law Digest.

American Law Reports (ALR) - Reference Collection KF 132 A45; Westlaw**
1) Contains: Discussion of state and federal issues with case annotations and selected reports of state and federal appellate court decisions. ALR Federal covers exclusively federal topics.
2) Coverage: Comes in 5 editions, covering 1919 - present. Coverage for ALR Federal is from 1969 - present.
3) Search by: ALR Index, ALR Digest, or the “Subjects Annotated” section in each volume.

West's Wisconsin Key Number Digest - Reference Collection KFW 2457 W47
1) Contains: Summaries of and citations to Wisconsin appellate court opinions and federal cases within the seventh circuit.
2) Coverage: 19th century to present.
3) Search by: Descriptive word index, table of cases, plaintiff-defendant table, topic and key number.

**Westlaw also has ALR-FAM databases, which contains annotations related to family law. See II. C, below.

B. Legal Encyclopedias - Cover a wide range of legal topics. Summarize broad principles of American Law. Encyclopedias are arranged alphabetically by topic.

American Jurisprudence 2d (AmJur 2d) - Reference Collection KF 154 A47; LexisNexis;Westlaw**
1) Contains: General coverage of over 430 broad legal topics.
2) Coverage: Current (updated with pocket parts).
3) Search by: General Index or Table of Statutes.

Corpus Juris Secundum (CJS) - Reference Collection KF 154 C57; Westlaw
1) Contains: General coverage of over 400 broad legal topics.
2) Coverage: Current (updated with pocket parts).
3) Search by: General Index, Index to Criminal Law, or Table of Statutes.


C. Treatises - Scholarly expositions on case law and legislation pertaining to a particular subject, and published in book form. These include multi-volume works, textbooks and shorter monographs. Index to Legal Periodicals and Books Full Test and Retrospective - Accessible via the UW Madison Libraries home page (see paragraph above); via Westlaw (ILP); via LexisNexis (LAWREV; ILP); and in print format, under the title Index to Legal Periodicals and Books. Volumes are located on the periodical index tables in the Grand Reading Room.
1) Contains: Citations to articles, bibliographies, book reviews, and other titles from 891 legal periodicals (law reviews and law journals). Includes some full text. Also contains citations to more than 2000 law books.

Social Science Periodicals

Family & Society Studies Worldwide (Family Studies Database)
1) Contains: indexing to more than 1800 journals, books, chapters, newsletters, government documents, and dissertations. Covers the educational, medical, psychological and sociological aspects of family literature.
2) Coverage: 1970 to present.
3) Search by: Author/Editor, publication year, periodical, publisher, ISSN or ISBN.

ProQuest Research Library
1) Contains: indexes more than 2,000 periodicals, and provides the full text of nearly 1,000 of them. It has a mix of general interest and academic journals that cover the arts, business, education, health, humanities, psychology, sciences, and the social sciences. Topics covered include multi cultural issues, gay/lesbian issues, and women's issues.
2) Coverage: Citations and abstracts from 1985 to present. Full-text journals go back to 1988.
3) Search by: Author, date, subject , article title, abstract and more.

PAIS International Computer File (Public Affairs Information Service)
1) Contains: Citations to more than 900 journals, books, statistical compilations and other titles on an international scale in the areas of public policy, social policy, and the social sciences in general.
2) Coverage: 1972 to present.
3) Search by: Subject , author, title, keyword.

Social Sciences Full-Text (1983-)
1) Contains: Indexing of more that 415 periodicals in the fields of economics, politics and foreign affairs, public administration, public health, sociology, criminology, environmental and urban studies, psychology and anthropology.
2) Coverage: Citations from 1982 to present; abstracts from 1994 to present; and selected full- text articles from 1995 .
3) Search by: Subject, keyword, date, journal title.

Sociological Abstracts (1963 - )
1) Contains: Indexing and abstracting of 2500 worldwide journals in sociology and related disciplines, papers presented at various sociological association meetings, dissertations, book reviews, and selected books.
2) Coverage: 1963 to present. Dissertations are available from 1986.

Web of Knowledge (1982- )
1) Contains: indexing of more than 8,000 peer-reviewed journals from a combination of three databases - Science Citation Index Expanded, Social Sciences Citation Index, and Arts &
